Northwest Winterfest: Spark Your Holiday Spirit in Spokane Valley
As the snow piles high and the chill settles deep in Spokane Valley, Northwest Winterfest illuminates the season with a dazzling display of radiant lanterns, turning the frosty evenings into a spectacle of light and cultural celebration.
Stroll through a wonderland of intricately crafted lanterns, each one a masterpiece showcasing the beauty of winter traditions from around the globe. From towering Chinese dragons to glittering ornaments and festive snowmen to interactive lifelike dinosaurs (new in 2024). the vibrant displays capture the holiday season. Alongside the enchanting and exciting visuals, enjoy live cultural performances and a delightful array of food and hot beverages that promise to keep you warm and wrapped in holiday cheer.
Deeply woven into Spokane Valley’s cultural tapestry, Northwest Winterfest traces its origins to the overwhelming success of the 2015 Washington State Chinese Lantern Festival. Inspired by this milestone event, local community members passionate about showcasing global traditions worked to establish Northwest Winterfest as an enduring celebration of the holiday season’s cultural diversity. In 2018, it officially became a nonprofit. In 2021, the festival has thrived thanks to the generous support of local grants, sponsorships and community partnerships. Beyond its stunning lantern displays and lively entertainment, the festival serves a vital educational role, introducing families and children to the customs and traditions of cultures from around the world. This year, the festival is adding Dinosaur Land, an experience that allows children and families to learn about prehistoric creatures in a fun and educational environment.
Each year, more than 15 different cultures are represented at Northwest Winterfest. Central to this experience are hand-painted lantern trees eloquently created by local artists. Each tree beautifully reflects the artist’s interpretation of their heritage. Showcased side-by-side, these displays offer a fascinating journey through the world’s traditions.
Enlivening the atmosphere are song and dance performances that reflect the dynamic spirit of our diverse communities here in the Valley. Immerse yourself in the mesmerizing artistry of an assortment of cultural groups as they bring stories of their heritage to life through captivating choreography. Also, enjoy the soulful melodies of classic rock and country artists, promising a blend of entertainment for all.
